Outsourced structural BIM: defining an RVT, IFC and PDF handover

Receiving an RVT file does not establish that a work package is complete. The agreement needs to explain what information is required, how it will be used and how it will be checked.

AT A GLANCE

Define a BIM handover by intended use and acceptance criteria, not file extensions alone. Agree model scope, software version, coordinates, required properties, drawing register, open issues and review ownership, then reconcile the RVT, IFC and PDF outputs in one issue record.

01

Make the work package measurable before procurement

“Model the bridge” could mean concrete geometry, detailed reinforcement, construction drawings or coordination support. Identify the element types, required views, reinforcement scope and document outputs. Keep unconfirmed inputs visible in an assumptions register instead of concealing them inside a fixed promise.

For an international outsourcing arrangement, agree working language, time-zone overlap, query turnaround and file exchange. The relationship between the production team and the client’s design authority should be explicit. Resourcing and delivery commitments should follow a review of the actual inputs and scope.

02

Replace a file checklist with an acceptance matrix

PDFDrawing register, sheet size and revisionLegibility at intended print size

A label such as “LOD 400” alone does not describe all required properties, drawings or interfaces. Define geometry and information expectations by element and use. This avoids a handover dispute in which both parties used the same label but expected different outputs.

03

Validate the exchange, not just the existence of a file

Review the IFC in an independent viewer as well as the authoring workflow where appropriate. Sample geometry, location, classification and required properties. If reinforcement is included in the scope, verify that the expected reinforcement information is actually represented in the export.

buildingSMART IDS helps express information requirements in a machine-readable form. An appropriate IDS check can test required properties and value conditions; it does not independently establish complete geometric coordination or structural adequacy. buildingSMART — Information Delivery Specification ↗

04

Define responsibilities across the outsourced team

The designer supplying information, the model author, the checker and the party authorizing issue may be different people. Assign each decision to an owner. If the team does not know who can resolve missing inputs, the production process becomes dependent on undocumented assumptions.

Choose the collaboration approach to suit the project. Autodesk documents linked models and different worksharing arrangements. Access, software versions and licensing conditions should be agreed before the delivery plan depends on a particular method. Autodesk — Collaborating with Revit Models ↗

05

Issue one coordinated snapshot

The transmittal should list files, revisions and intended status together. A current model packaged with outdated drawings remains an inconsistent handover even if both files open without errors. The final check must cover relationships between the deliverables.

To discuss an AKSVERO work package, provide the current models or drawings, expected deliverables, governing revision and BIM requirements. A representative pilot can establish presentation conventions, review ownership and actual production effort before the larger package is resourced.

QUESTIONS / ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Do RVT and IFC meet the same handover need?

Not necessarily. RVT supports the native Revit workflow; IFC supports exchange between applications. Define the intended use and required information for each.

How should a large outsourced package start?

Review the inputs and delivery requirements, then use a representative pilot where useful to validate the production method, quality expectations and review responsibilities before scaling.
